Athletics set to return at SCC as the Panthers opt in for Spring II Sports as announced by AD Mitch Campbell

Dear Panthers, 

After months of planning, preparing, and waiting, we are pleased to share some good news – Sacramento City and the rest of the Los Rios colleges have informed the Big 8 Conference of our plans to opt IN to Late Spring sports for this year (Late Spring sports are the traditional Spring sports that were delayed statewide due to COVID-19 health concerns). This decision is contingent upon Sacramento County moving to the less restrictive "Red" tier in the statewide reopening blueprint, and based on the positive trend in COVID-19 cases in our area there are indications that we are headed that direction in the coming weeks.

Outdoor Activities Only – In order to continue to mitigate risk to our student athletes, coaches, and staff, only outdoor activities will be allowable, but activities can include conditioning classes, team practices, and some limited competition with only teams from other Los Rios colleges.

Safety Plans with Rigorous Testing Requirements – Each program has already documented and submitted a safety plan for review and approval, which includes safety protocols, and a comprehensive required COVID-19 testing program. Adherence to these plans is required.

No Out-of-District Travel – At this point, we will not be traveling outside of our district for any competition or training, but travel within our district will be allowed.

Once Sacramento County reaches the "Red" tier, the following Late Spring sports at SCC can resume outdoor team activities and begin planning for Intra-District competition:

• Baseball
• Softball
• Men's Swimming
• Women's Swimming
• Tennis (Women's)
• Men's Track and Field
• Women's Track and Field

Teams and programs originally planning on competing in other seasons, or those Late Spring sports opting out due to personal health concerns, can also resume outdoor team practices and activities once Sacramento County reaches the "Red" tier. The same rigorous testing and safety requirements will be in place for these programs. At SCC, this applies to the following other sports:

• Men's Basketball
• Women's Basketball
• Men's Cross Country
• Women's Cross Country
• Football
• Women's Golf
• Soccer (Women's)
• Volleyball (Women's)
• Water Polo (Women's)
• Wrestling (Men's)

Each coach will work with their student athletes to provide more detailed information about possible schedules for resuming activities, testing requirements, and safety protocols as we get closer to possible start dates.

We remain optimistic that, as public health conditions continue to improve, we will be able to expand allowable activities and competition in the coming months. In the meantime, the health and well-being of our students, coaches, and staff remains our top priority.
