Sac City has solid showing at ELAC Invite as the team finishes in 4th place overall
The Sacramento City College Panthers women's wrestling team concluded their regular-season on April 5th at the 3rd-annual Leader of the Pack tournament hosted by East Los Angeles College (ELAC). The event served as the team's final tune-up before the Panthers return to ELAC on April 19th, the site of this season's 3C2A State Championships. The Panthers amassed 60.5-team points on the day to finish 4th in a twelve-team field.
Leading the effort for City College was Ashlee Gutierrez, tournament champion at 131lbs. Gutierrez advanced to the tournament finals by way of a 10-0 technical superiority victory in the quarterfinals and a fall in the semifinals. In the finals, Gutierrez dispatched Zitlali Sarmiento of Mt. San Antonio College via 8-0 decision, in a match-up of State title-contenders.
Hot on the heels of Gutierrez were tournament runner-ups Karissa McDaniel (103lbs), Andrea Gonzalez (117lbs), and Paula Aguilar (180lbs). McDaniel won her semifinal via fall to set-up yet another meeting with Big 8 Conference rival, Graciela Caro of Skyline College. In the finals, McDaniel led 2-1 at the half, but couldn't hold-off Caro in the second period, ultimately losing via 5-2 decision. In round-robin action, Gonzalez won two of three bouts, via fall and 12-2 technical superiority, respectively, to earn silver. In similar fashion, Aguilar won three of her four bouts in round-robin on the day, compiling three first-period falls to earn silver. The Panthers will be back in action on April 19th at the 3C2A State Championships, also held at ELAC.
